For some people, who still picture Russia as a land of eternal winter and cold, the information about Russian vineyards may be shocking. The truth is that not all parts of Russia are covered with snow the whole year-round. Some regions have a favorable climate with lots of sunny days and mild winters.

As you may guess, the wine area in Russia can be found in the south. To be precise: between the Black and the Caspian Seas. There are several regions in this part of the country, each of them has unique soil composition, geographical position, and climate. The only thing that unites them all is the amount of sunny and frost-free days.

  1. Krasnodar wine region (Kuban)

Krasnodar Krai is one of the most famous and prestigious Russian wineries. Its convenient location on the shore of the Black Sea and mild climate allows grapes to reach full ripening. This region has the most favorable conditions for vines: proximity of the sea, around 200 warm days per year, enough sun. The wineries like Myskhako, SORT, Lefkadia Valley and Chateau Le Grand Vostok can be found here.

The diversity of grape varieties that are cultivated here is huge: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Aligote, Chardonnay, Riesling, Marselan, etc.

  1. Area of Dagestan

The most southern wine region of Russia and another historical area of winemaking. Mineral and buttery, the wines of Dagestan can serve as the perfect drink for aperitifs. The choice is vast: white and red wines, dry and semi-sweet. Interesting blends and local varietal wines will impress you with their mild taste and pleasant fruitiness.

The area has a strong tendency to preserve the traditions of the past, that is why the local wineries produce mostly autochthonous wines: Saperavi, Rkatiseli, Tchernyi Kizlyar, Narma, etc.

  1. Stavropol

Another part of this area that is known for the production of wine. According to historians, the first wine here was produced in the first half of the 19th century. Fertile soils and mild climate made it possible to cultivate multiple grape varieties in this area. Stavropol is mostly known for its red wines.

  1. The region of Rostov

The Don Valley is a home of bright, fruity and mineral wines. This region is characterized by its hot and dry summers. The winters are usually quite severe, although it doesn’t prevent winemakers from Rostov from producing high-quality and interesting goods. This part is known for having mostly autochthonous grape varieties: Tsimlyankskiy Tchernyi, Kumshatskiy, Krasnostop Zolotovskiy, Plechistik, etc.

  1. Volgograd

One of the most complicated regions for growing vines – Volgograd is a semi-desert with extremely hot summers, severe winds, and rainy winters. However, even here, the Russian winemakers manage to produce worthy products. This area is known for hybrid grape varieties that can survive extreme temperature changes. Volgograd wines have good potential in the future.

If you want to discover the tastes of Russian wines, we recommend starting your acquaintance with the Krasnodar wine region (Kuban). This is the area of the oldest wineries.
